MattTW Aug 2, 2016 5:23 AM (in response to yellowsubmarine)I rebooted, now it is working.
When I started beta 4 it asked me to "install required components" a second time. Don't know if related or not.

Was not working 10min ago. I installed iTunes 12.4.3 and Safari 10.0 seed 4 (all from Mac App Store), then I was prompted to install Xcode 8 tools again. I did. Was still not working. Rebooted once more, and now it is working again \o/

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
@ben Aug 9, 2016 12:42 PM (in response to yellowsubmarine)So Xcode 8 beta-5 is out today, in the release notes there is this:
Resolved in Xcode 8 beta 5 – IDE
- The Editor’s Comment/Uncomment Selection command is functional when enabled. (27524523)
Wow, great! But unfortunately, it is still not working for me. The menu items for comment/uncomment are still greyed out and the shortcut keys do not work either. My question is, what do they mean by "when enabled"? I've never had to "enable" this feature before, it was always available and just always worked. And how would I go about enabling it? I can't find anywhere to do that in the Preferences or menus.
Anyone find out how to make it work? This is a huge issue for me because I use comment/uncomment hundreds of times a day! Making it really difficult to use Xcode 8 for anything. Rebooting after installing beta-5 did not help.
For reference, I'm on a cylinder Mac Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6, writing Swift 2.3 code.

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
guywithmazda Aug 12, 2016 1:55 PM (in response to @ben)Preferences > Key Bindings shows it under "Editor Menu for Source Code", but there doesn't appear to be any way to turn it (or the part of the menu it resides in) on or off.
-
Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
@ben Aug 14, 2016 10:01 PM (in response to guywithmazda)Oh, is that what they mean by enabled? That's weird and doesn't really make sense to me, since the bug does not seem to be in the key binding, but in the menu item itself not being available (which of course also means any shortcut to it won't work).

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
hsilived Aug 11, 2016 7:51 AM (in response to yellowsubmarine)Does not work for me either, and I cannot find the option to turn it back on. I agree with @yellowsubmarine it is hugely inconvenient. You get used to using short cuts and when they don't work your whole work flow gets pulled out of sync. Please chime in Apple and let us know how to re-enable this option.

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
kolpanic Aug 30, 2016 4:15 AM (in response to @ben)Thanks, but credit goes to Chris Hanson of Apple, who gave the original solution. I just quoted his tweet to fix a typo.
FWIW, I think the problem is more of a documentation issue. The release notes for the Xcode 8 beta mention using xpccachectl to enable source-edition extensions on El Cap. However, they omit the fact that the comment/uncomment menu is now implemented as such an extension.

Wellington Sep 8, 2016 5:28 AM (in response to macmark.de)I had this issue with Pre-GM versions but not any more. Maybe the fact its now just called "Xcode" instead of "Xcode-beta" fixed it.

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
kolpanic Sep 8, 2016 5:26 AM (in response to yellowsubmarine)The Xcode 8 GM has a fix for this. From the release notes:
Source Editor Extensions
- To use the Editor's Comment/Uncomment Selection and Add Documentation commands—as well as other installed Xcode Extensions—on OS X version 10.11, launch Xcode and install additional system components, then restart your Mac. (26106213)
Looks like the additional system components installer script does xpccachectl on El Cap.

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
d0n13 Dec 16, 2016 6:28 AM (in response to yellowsubmarine)I've noticed in xCode Preferences | Key Bindings | All, that there are multiple binings showing up if you search fro CMD+/
One of them was blank after the search so I just replace it with the key sequence cmd+/ and now it works. I had tried the thing from twitter above and it didn't seem to work for me.
Using Xode 8.1 (8B62). Hope it helps somebody if it works...

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
Jacques N Jan 18, 2017 1:07 PM (in response to yellowsubmarine)While working on moderately to large sized C++ projects, I have also noticed that the comment toggle ( ⌘ / ) intermitently stops working, even when all the key bindings are enabled, and the function is not greyed-out in the Editor → Structure → Commnent Selection.
I realized that it only happens for specific source files. If you have multiline /* ... */ comments, it is possible that they overlap, are nested, or not properly closed. This probably confuses the parser that the editor is using. The problem is resolved by deleting the messy, commented-out code. Running a Build Clean also seems to help.
I'm not sure if this is the same problem being discussed here, but I thought I might add my experience.

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
kwab Mar 15, 2017 11:18 AM (in response to Jacques N)Thanks Jaques. This is the most concrete explanation I've seen.
In my case having:
//*/
breaks the comment shortcut for all lines below.
Adding a space seems to fix the parsing.
// */
There might be more cases that screw the parser but at least theres some order to the maddness.

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
coccinelle Mar 24, 2017 3:01 AM (in response to yellowsubmarine)This appears to be still broken at Xcode 8.2.1 (os 10.12.3): sometimes the comment shortcuts stops working and I have to restart XCode.
This is very annoying and doesn't look like something that should take that long too fix -- this should be a P0 for the xcode dev team to fix.

slajerek Mar 24, 2017 12:19 PM (in response to 0x2333)This is seriously great, Xcode can't comment code - which is the most used functionality I believe :-)
The same here in not beta / production Xcode.
By the way, the comment out section shortcut works perfectly in the same project on my Xcode 6.2.

Re: Xcode 8 beta 4 - Comment/Uncomment broken
ffabri Mar 24, 2017 10:16 PM (in response to yellowsubmarine)This solution worked for XCode Version 8.2.1 (8C1002) not beta under macOS Sierra.
" Try this. I tried the suggested terminal command + restart many times and it didn't work, but this did. Go to your applications folder and rename Xcode to whatever you want, then open the app. Check to see if the comment selection now works, if so, you can go back and rename Xcode to its default name. If not, then keep searching for another method. "
