How does Travel Assistance Work?

So I requested Travel Assistance as part of my application, however I am wondering if I should book a hotel now or wait? Does it usually work where apple just reimburses you later on or will they handle creating a reservation for you? I am just wondering because I see some relatively good deals at the Parc55 near Moscone and I wanna grab it before it goes up.
