I have somehow managed to switch off the error messages that come up as you are typing co9de in, I don't know how I did it, and I can't switch them back on, as they are very useful, please could someone tell me how to switch them back on.

Normally you select Show issues navigator (at the top of the left panel of Xcode-.
Then ay the bottom, you have a Filter line. Click on the rightmost icon to turn on / off (show errors only or all warnings as well).
I have absolutely no idea what I did to turn them off, but I have followed your advice to no avail. I still hasver no error messages.
I can't believe this, I shutdown my iMac overnight and now the error messages are back???????
