Hardware Advice

Hello. I'm planning to replace my late-2013 iMac with a mac mini and wonder whether anyone has any advice on the minimum configuration I will need. My primary focus is app development (i.e. Xcode/SwiftUI). i.e. recommended memory, M2 or M2 Pro Also a recommended 27inch display (not Studio Display...too expensive!) Thank you

My personal advice (that's what I did):

  • Mac mini M2 Pro (notably for the larger ports configuration) ; if 32 GB, same price as MacMini 32 GB.
  • 32 GB memory (16GB could be enough, but if you plan to keep it 10 years, it's better
  • 2 TB storage. 1 TB could do it but same reason, to be safe for the next 10 years
  • 27" display ; effectively, Mac Studio is nice to have but not a must. There are apparently very Good 27" at Samsung (see Mac Rumors, they have a lot of tests)

May be you will find good deals during Black Friday.

Hope that helps. And let us know what you did…

If you’ve been happy using a 10-year-old iMac until now, then a minimum-spec modern Mac mini will be fine.

The first thing to consider upgrading is probably RAM.

Regarding displays, is your eyesight good enough to tell the difference between standard and high-dpi?
