Mac crashes when extracting Xcode 13.x xip file

Hi, I'm having problem with Xcode xip file. It crashes system around 70% extract complete. I tried Xcode 13.1.xip and 13.2b.xip, both crashed at same point. My environment is Big Sur 11.6.1 on Intel Mac Pro 2020. Any clue?

How much disk space available ? It should be at least 50 or even 60 GB before starting download.

130G available. BTW, I downloaded those xip files two times, they still crash. Also tried xip cli tool, but same. Crashed at some point.

Ok, I was able to extract Xcode 13.2b xip finally. Not sure what caused, but here is what I did:

  • Deleted all files/folders under DerivedData/
  • Downloaded and installed "Command Line Tools for Xcode 13.2 beta" first
  • Restarted Mac
  • Started to expand Xcode 13.2b.xip with no other apps running

That's it. I suspect there was low memory issue there. I have 16G but I was working on my project with Xcode 13 while expanding xip files so it may have chewed up free memory then. Or latest "Command Line Tools" is required, which is very unlikely.

Hi there. Did you ever find an answer to this question about Xcode expand that actually resolved the issue you were having? I'm experiencing the same issue with the download file Xcode_13.2.1.xip. I have tried changing the Archive Utility preferences to "expand into the same directory as archive" after moving the file to an external drive but with no success. It still uses up all the space on my boot drive and and then hangs up. Thanks in advance.
