MacOS repeatedly crashes trying to install Xcode 13

I tried to upgrade to Xcode 13 and macOS crashed after getting most of the way there (according to the progress bar after ~2 hours). Just in case that was the problem I then upgraded to the latest 11.6 macOS version and tried again. Same result. I then put the existing Xcode in the trash and tried again. Same result.

I can't figure out how to stop the app store from trying to reload Xcode, so now I have a system without Xcode and that crashes every 2 hours.

Help!

Try to download Xcode from an other site, such as :

h t t p s : / / xcodereleases.com

In System Settings, select Software updates (second part of window). Unselect "Automatic updates"

  • Automatic updates were not enabled. I finally got it to stop automatically reloading my force quitting installd and trashing Xcode in the applications directory.

So far I've tried reinstalling Xcode 13 and 12.5.1 from xcodreleases.com. Each time it crashed macOS at the end. I'm trying earlier releases.

I finally got Xcode 13 installed by doing it in Safe Mode.

This is a bit odd because according to kextstat, I only have Apple extensions in the OS. Here's a portion of the crash report in case an Apple dev wants to investigate:

I successfully installed xCode 13 after experiencing the same issue by deleting Norton from the machine. After xCode installed okay then reinstall Norton.

Also to stop the retry cycle of down load, install, crash I removed xCode temp files from the Application folder, then reinstalled the older version of xCode from backup drive.
