When I extract Xcode from a XIP located on an external drive the unarchive process will never complete and will continue until such time as it fills all the available space on the drive.
Even after formatting / repairing the drive the space on the drive does not become usable again.
I have tested with multiple versions of Xcode, Multiple different external drives of varying size from different manufacturers, multiple different Macs running different versions of OS X.
