Start a timer, when app goes into the background, how do I keep that timer going? And an alarm goes off when the timer finishes.

I am hoping someone can help me out here or point me in the right direction, I am at a impasse.

I have an app and trying to flesh the idea that I want to create. The point is to allow the user to run 1-5 min, at the end of the timer, a alarm will go off on the phone. However I need to allow the app to go into the background and continue the timer.

What should happen:

I want to start a timer, when app goes into background how do I keep that timer going? And an alarm goes off when the timer finishes
