I'm getting this message when I try to install Xcode, it says there is not enough disk space.
I checked my main volume and there is 60GB available.
I'm assuming that Xcode can't possibly require more than 60GB and that this message is a mistake. How do I fix it?

Seems you're close to enough, or not. However, others have reported the same issue lately, even w/90 GB free, leading to blaming the backend. I'm used to seeing issues when free is below 50, but that was in then, this is now. I think w/current macOS, the MAS app is a bit more finicky for some reason.
If I were you, I'd get closer to 100 GB free and see if that makes the backend happy. Be sure to empty the trash and wait for the new number to show up at the bottom of a Finder window before trying again.
Or, just hit more downloads and DIY.
If you are using Time Machine, this may help you. Old snapshots were causing this error for me.
Open terminal and run:
sudo tmutil listlocalsnapshots /
sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots [oldSnapshotDate]Once your old snapshots are deleted, try restarting the App Store and installing again - it worked for me!
