I am trying to download the latest version of xcode and get an error in the app store telling me there is not enough free space??? I have almost 50gb free on the hard drive. I even deleted the older xcode thinking that would work. Nope. How can I download xcode? Thanks!
50 GB is so razor thin I'm not surprised you're having issues. You need swap space for the OS, space to hold the download, room to unpack the download, and room to install the download, all at the same time.
That said, others have had the backend complain about 90 GB not being enough. Me, I get nervous when I fall below 250 GB free.
Keep clearing space (don't forget to empty the trash and wait for macOS to digest the changes) and still no joy, hope the bug on the backend gets bored and goes away.
Finally got it installed after deleting and restarting. Let it sit ad tried again. Still have about 60gb of free space.
