XCode performance on old Macs is v bad

Anyone noticed Xcode (not the beta) is failing at even basic tasks on older macs.

Currently on a project stuck with a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) not my choice.

even basic tasks such as refactor/rename a class fails quiet often.

Refactoring often fails to rename the file and filename turns red in the file list because

  • class has been renamed in the code.
  • Filename has been renamed in the project tree
  • but actual filename on filesystem stuck at old class name so gets lost to the project

So I need manually change the filename in the tree to old filename and then back to the new filename

I no longer use CMD+CLICK to find definition - I have to use search to find a method its way faster.

Indexing/CMD+CLICK mostly useless.

Anyone notice compilation time of old Obj-C project seemed to have slowed down - now take ages?

Ive asked my boss for new mac the $1000 dollar stand has put him off 😉

Which XCode version ?

What is critical is the RAM you have and disk space.

I think that now, below 16 GB (better to have 24 GB) may become problematic.

I run XCode 10.3 on 16GB MacBookpro, without problem.

As for the new Mac, you speak of the new MacPro. May be, instead of investing 1000$ in a stand (nice indeed), you could offer more RAM and storage on older Mac or just get a recent iMac.
