Haven't had a chance to try this (see my reply to @red_menace above), but I'll use this approach in future. I'll also go back and see if saving/restoring the delimiters works. I still don't understand why my setting of the delimiters was ignored. If anything, I could understand the opposite - i.e. changing them could mess up something later that relies on the delimiters being unchanged.
