I've also done some testing and M1 offers good hardware encoding performance but at a significant cost of bitrate or quality.
My MacBook Pro 13" 2020 encodes at around 1000 FPS but results in a much worse quality than software encoded x264 "fast" preset that encodes at around 250 FPS.
